SUMMARY:Seminario Temas Actuales: Any Light Particle Search
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer: Dr. Axel Lindner\, Spokesperson of the ALPS II collaboration at DESY in Hamburg\, Germany \nAbstract: ALPS II at DESY in Hamburg searches for axions — hypothetical particles that could help explain\ndark matter and other mysteries of modern physics. The experiment uses the “light-shining-through-awall” technique: laser light is sent toward a light-tight barrier\, while strong magnetic fields may allow a\ntiny fraction of photons to convert into axions\, pass through the wall\, and reappear as light on the other\nside.\nIn its first science run\, ALPS II excluded photon–axion conversion probabilities down to the 1e-13 level\,\nimproving the sensitivity to the axion–photon coupling strength by about a factor of 20 over previous\nexperiments of this kind. The ongoing upgrade is expected to make ALPS II the first purely laboratorybased experiment to probe beyond existing astrophysical limits on axions.\nAfter the search for new particles\, the ALPS II infrastructure will also be used to study the quantum\nvacuum through magnetic birefringence and\, ultimately\, to search for high-frequency gravitational waves

SUMMARY:Seminario: The saga of muon tomography at CEA Saclay: from high-energy particle detector developments to societal applications
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Muon tomography is an imaging technique that exploits the limited flux of natural cosmic-ray muons to probe the interior of large and dense structures. At CEA Saclay\, the development of this technology emerged from detector and electronics technologies originally developed for high-energy particle physics\, and has since evolved towards applications far beyond fundamental physics. \nThis seminar will retrace this technological and scientific journey\, from the development of genetic multiplexed resistive Micromegas detectors to the realization of dedicated muon telescopes. The first MultiGen telescope\, developed within the WatTo project\, demonstrated the potential of muography to probe large-scale structures and subsequently contributed to the ScanPyramids mission\, helping reveal previously unknown structures within the Great Pyramid of Khufu. \nThe talk will then focus on applications in the nuclear field\, including the monitoring of reactors during decommissioning or in the event of an incident\, as well as the inspection of nuclear installations and waste packages where conventional techniques are difficult or impossible to use. \nBeyond these applications\, the seminar will discuss the challenges of technology transfer: detector robustness\, long-term operation\, environmental constraints\, gas management\, data acquisition and analysis. Ultimately\, the story illustrates how technologies born in fundamental physics can become scientific tools for nuclear applications and the exploration of otherwise inaccessible environments. \n  \nSpeaker: David Attié (Institute of Research into the Fundamental Laws of the Universe\, IRFU\, CEA-Saclay\, Francia) \n

SUMMARY:Seminario de Temas Actuales-Dark Matter: The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment and an intriguing new dark matter search result
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The nature of dark matter remains one of the biggest mysteries in modern science. With plenty of different possible candidates and a wide mass range\, Weakly Interactive Massive Particles (WIMPs) usually rises as one of the most promising candidates. The direct detection experiment LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) primarily searches for WIMPs using 7 tonnes of active liquid xenon at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (South Dakota). With this technology\, LZ has demonstrated world-leading sensitivity to a wide range of dark matter models. A new analysis from LZ searching for effective field theory and inelastic models of dark matter identifies a single nuclear recoil candidate at 248 keV\, in tension with the background-only hypothesis at a global significance of 2.6σ. Whilst this is far from constituting a detection\, the event is nevertheless intriguing. In this seminar\, I will give an overview of the analysis\, discuss the relevant high-energy backgrounds\, and explore the wider implications of the event for dark matter searches. I will also introduce how the LZ detector works and highlight some of the other experiment’s most recent results\, including the observation of solar neutrinos through Coherent Elastic neutrino-Nucleus Scattering and our latest search for more conventional WIMPs. \nAlberto Usón\, Institute for Particle and Nuclear Physics at the School of Physics and Astronomy\, University of Edinburgh

SUMMARY:Probing strong dynamics with cosmic neutrinos
DESCRIPTION:Triggered by the IceCube detection of astrophysical neutrino candidates in the range of PeV energies\, we propose to investigate the sensitivity of future South Pole neutrino-detection experiments to the neutrino-nucleon cross section. By using the combination of up- and down-going data of neutrinos\, sensible to neutral current processes one can disentangle particle physics from astrophysics and constrain the neutrino interactions. In particular\, we show that IceCube-Gen2 will be able to determine the neutrino-nucleon cross section with a precisión comparable to the perturbative QCD informed by collider data and eventually to detect new physics. \nPonente: Carlos García Canal (Universidad de la Plata\, Argentina)
