Six tenure track positions of Researcher in Astrophysics and Cosmology at CEFCA

The «Centro de Estudios de Física del Cosmos de Aragón» (CEFCA) invites applications for six tenure track positions of Researcher in Astrophysics and Cosmology. The positions are initially for five years, that will turn into a permanent Researcher Staff position after a positive evaluation before the end of the contract.

Successful candidates will join the Research Division at CEFCA to have a leading role in the scientific exploitation of the present and future OAJ surveys, like e.g. J-PAS and J-PLUS. The six positions aim to cover a wide range of fields in Astrophysical topics, like moving objects of the Solar System, atmospheric parameters and variability of Milky Way stars, star formation and stellar populations of spatially resolved and distant galaxies, Supernovae detection and characterization, clusters of galaxies, the environment of galaxies, supermassive black holes, etc.

The call will be permanently open until the six offered positions are awarded. The first deadline for submitting applications is Oct 15th at 23:59:59h CEST. More information can be found at the call webpage: https://www.cefca.es/cefca_en/reference_0078

Ilya L. Shapiro, «Local and nonlocal models of quantum gravity» 🗓

The main difficulty of perturbative quantum gravity (QG) in D=4 dimensions is the conflict between renormalizability and unitarity of the theory. The simplest version of QG is based on General Relativity and turns out to be nonrenormalizable. One can construct renormalizable and even superrenormalizable versions of QG by introducing higher derivatives. In the local versions of higher derivative models of QG there are always unphysical higherderivative massive unphysical ghosts. One can construct non-polynomial in derivatives (or, equivalently, nonlocal) models of QG, which have no ghosts at the tree level. However, taking loop corrections into account one meets infinite amount of ghost-like complex states. The theories of both local and nonlocal types attracted a lot of attention in the last years and our purpose it to present a brief review of the problems and perspectives of these models, according to the present-day understanding.

School announcement for PhD students

The second edition of the GGI PhD School on:
«Theoretical Aspects of Astroparticle Physics, Cosmology and Gravitation»
The Galileo Galilei Institute of Theoretical Physics
Arcetri, Florence (Italy)
From March 9 to March 20, 2020
is announced. Details can be found at the page: http://www.ggi.infn.it/showevent.pl?id=340
Applications can be submitted through the same web page and the deadline is January 11, 2020.
The maximum number of attendance is 40 students.
This School aims at providing robust and detailed introductions on the basic theoretical concepts and main tools to work in the field of Astroparticle Physics, Cosmology and Gravitation. The courses are organized as lectures at the blackboard in the morning and are integrated with hands-on and discussion sessions with an instructor in the afternoon.
The program of the 2020 edition is:
«Inflation and primordial black holes» – Lecturer: Chris Byrnes (University of Sussex)
«Sterile neutrinos in physics, astrophysics, cosmology» – Lecturer: Carlo Giunti (INFN and University of Turin)
«Cosmic rays and multimessenger astronomy» – Lecturer: Markus Ahlers (Niels Bohr Institute, Copenhagen)
«Particle dark matter: WIMPs, axions and axion-like particles» – Lecturer: Laura Covi (University of Goettingen)
The School will profit of the Galileo Galilei Institute facilities. Each student will have office space to study and discuss, with a lot of opportunities to interact with lecturers.
Accommodation in shared apartments will be provided at the cost of about 300 Euros for the whole period. Scholarships to cover this expense are available upon request. Lunch will be provided during the weekdays on the GGI premises for students and lecturers, at no cost. All the dinners and the lunches during the weekends, instead, are to be paid by the participants.
For any inquiry about the school, please write to apcg.school@gmail.com
