TRISEP-2020 Summer school

TRISEP is a two-week annual summer school for graduate students and junior post-doctoral fellows held this year at SNOLAB and Laurentian University from July 6 to 17 with a tour of SNOLAB on July 5.

The topics include the standard model, neutrino physics, long-baseline oscillations, neutrinoless double beta decay, physics beyond the standard model at the LHC, dark matter, dark matter scenarios and direct detection, simulation with GEANT4, and statistics.

For details regarding the school, application, and student support please see http://www.trisep.ca/.

The TRi-Institute School in Elementary Particles is hosted annually in rotation by TRIUMF, the Perimeter Institute, and SNOLAB. We are grateful for the support of the Institute of Particle Physics and Laurentian University.

Ilya L. Shapiro, “Local and nonlocal models of quantum gravity” 🗓

The main difficulty of perturbative quantum gravity (QG) in D=4 dimensions is the conflict between renormalizability and unitarity of the theory. The simplest version of QG is based on General Relativity and turns out to be nonrenormalizable. One can construct renormalizable and even superrenormalizable versions of QG by introducing higher derivatives. In the local versions of higher derivative models of QG there are always unphysical higherderivative massive unphysical ghosts. One can construct non-polynomial in derivatives (or, equivalently, nonlocal) models of QG, which have no ghosts at the tree level. However, taking loop corrections into account one meets infinite amount of ghost-like complex states. The theories of both local and nonlocal types attracted a lot of attention in the last years and our purpose it to present a brief review of the problems and perspectives of these models, according to the present-day understanding.

Bad Honnef Physics School on “Axions and WISPs”

Targeted to PhD students or young postdocs working on, or with an interest in, axion research. The school aims at providing the foundations of this emerging field, or rounding the overview for those already engaged in aspects of axion research, experimentally or in theory.

It will take place from 2 to 7 August 2020, at the Physikzentrum Bad Honnef, near Bonn and Cologne, Germany. The 200€ fee includes full board and lodging.

Spanish excellence program for recruitment of senior researchers (Ramón y Cajal, Juan de la Cierva) – call now open!

The Spanish ministry offers an recruitment program with both senior postdoctoral positions (Juan de la Cierva) and tenure-track positions (Ramón y Cajal). Those programs are highly competitive, and offer attractive formulas to get established as a researcher. They are mostly based on the excellence of the candidate’s curriculum, research project and host group. The annual call is now open until the 21st January.

The research groups at CAPA continuously seek excellent candidates interested in joining them to support candidacies to these programs. Please contact us if you are interested.
